Should Arsenal snap up Manchester United’s £8.7m forgotten man?

Nani (Portugal)Watching Nani’s career stall over the last couple of seasons hasn’t been easy. Remember the excitement when Manchester United spent 25.5m euros on him back in the summer of 2007? That excitement has all but evaporated at this stage in his career. Manchester United fans can barely even muster a shrug when it comes to their nonchalant, but gifted, wing-man.

Nani peaked back in the two seasons between 2010 and 2012. Over that 24 month period he made 89 appearances for club, chipped in with 10 goals and made a number of important assists.

Unfortunately, it’s been diminishing returns ever since. In 2012/13 he made 21 appearances and scored 3 goals. Last season he did even worse, making 13 appearances for Manchester United and finding the back of the net just once. Whilst injury problems haven’t helped, Nani also needs to take some responsibility for his form.

Given his dwindling reputation, I can’t help but wonder what Arsenal fans think of the constant rumours linking their club to the Portuguese talent. Should The Gunners really be in the market for a player who has been out of form for the best part of two years? Would that be a smart piece of business?

According to Portuguese source A Bola (via The Mirror), Arsene Wenger is set to ‘approach’ Manchester United with an £8.7m bid for the player. If that isn’t evidence of how far Nani has fallen, I’m not sure what is.

The source also suggests that Louis Van Gaal is willing to let Nani leave, if a club comes in with the right sum of cash.

With Nani in desperate need of a change of scenery (and a manager who believes in him), this move could prove to be beneficial for everybody involved. Nani would get another shot at the big time, Arsenal would get a player who still has a lot of potential (despite all his issues) and Manchester United would get some cash they can use to bring in new players.

It’s not a deal to get excited about, but it could prove to be an influential one nonetheless.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils swoop in for this Manchester United reject?
