Can Oscar Garcia take Brighton out from under Poyet’s shadow?

|

Last month, Poyet, assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and coach Charlie Oatway were suspended pending an internal inquiry into alleged breaches of contract. It is thought that Poyet, who was linked to the Reading job after Brian McDermott’s dismissal earlier in the year, breached his contract in a post-match interview. Taricco’s suspension has since been lifted, but Oatway remains suspended and Poyet has now been dismissed. Poyet has refused to comment on what happened and has said that he will appeal against the decision to fire him and discovering the news from a BBC Producer while in the studio working as a guest pundit. “I’ve still had no communication from the club,” Poyet said at half-time of the match between Spain and Nigeria. The Uruguayan had been in charge since 2009 and had seen his side promoted from League One in 2011/12.

Interesting times lie ahead for Poyet, who was such hot property just 3 months ago. The upper echelons of the Brighton management now appear to see him as a tricky character and the two do not part on good terms. Don’t expect to see the Uruguayan jobless for long, however, such was the upward curve that his Brighton team were on that he was mentioned in dispatches for every job that came up in the Premier League from the beginning of last season until April, including his former club, Chelsea. His linguistic ability and style of play could also see him find a job on the continent before long, but expect him to stay in the UK, where despite a tricky few weeks, he remains hot property.

Meanwhile, chairman Tony Bloom welcomed Garcia to Brighton, saying: “We are delighted to have Oscar here to help us prepare for the new season and plan what promises to be another exciting campaign for the club”.

The club will now look to put the circus that has been the last 6 weeks behind them and build for the new season. They will be among the favourites to achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2013/14, with Poyet leaving solid foundations behind. Bloom will hope that Garcia can take the club to the next level and appears to have followed the examples of fellow South Coast club Southampton, who employed Mauricio Pochettino in a similar appointment in February. The belief at Southampton was that after successive promotions, Nigel Adkins had taken the club as far as he could and new blood was required to accelerate the team’s development. A solid end to the season under Pochettino suggested that the move could be paying off. Brighton fans will hope that Garcia’s style of play and continental flair can have a similar effect.

However, the Poyet saga may yet cast a long shadow with an appeal pending and the club will be unable to truly move on until this is resolved.
