The search begins for Liverpool’s new boss: but who’s the right man for the job?

|

Verdict – A manager who would be welcomed by any team, but could he turn Liverpool’s fortunes around quick enough to please the FSG? 8/10

Rafael Benitez:

Pros – The old master, he guided Liverpool to the Champions League and FA Cup in his previous term in charge. Many fans would welcome him back with open arms to the club that Benitez never wanted to leave.

Cons – Many criticised his transfer policies while at Liverpool, something that hasn’t improved since he left. Not only this, but after a disastrous spell at Inter Milan, his reputation has fallen someway.

Verdict – Would be a safe choice with his previous experience at the club, but would it be a step in the right direction for a club trying to move forward? 7/10

And two for the wish-list…

Jose Mourinho:

Pros – Success follows this man wherever he goes. Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Madrid, all top-level clubs, all thrived under “The Special One”.  Besides, a big club in the doldrums, no League title for years, a reasonable squad base, and a rich owner who will invest. Isn’t the script written for Mourinho?

Cons – Seems set to stay at Real Madrid for another season at least, and could be seen as too risky even for Mourinho to attempt at rescuing.

Pep Guardiola:

Pros – 71 wins in his first 100 games at Barcelona, first ever Barcelona manager in history to record 4 straight wins over Real Madrid in the El Clasico, and the first ever manager to win 6 trophies in one calendar year (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and the Club World Cup in 2009), and 13 trophies in four seasons at Barcelona. The most successful Barcelona in history, there is nothing this young man has not accomplished in his short managerial career. Also, his brother Pere is Luis Suarez’s agent.

Cons – Intent on taking at least a year-long sabbatical from football, Guardiola would be highly unlikely to renege on that vow to manage at Liverpool.

Verdicts – It would take miracles to make either man jump to take the Liverpool hot-seat, but stranger things have happened (Jordan Henderson for £15 million anyone?)… 10/10

All in all, any of these men could be the answer for Liverpool. At the same time, they might fall to the same fate as Hodgson and Dalglish. The board have to give whoever it is time to build the squad and change the fortunes, or the revolving managerial door at Anfield will keep turning for years to come.

Liverpool should take Frank Rijkaard as manager. How he doing in Barcelona is Great.

  • Bomber25 says:

The Fenway Sports Group inherited Hodgson. They listened to the Liverpool fans by drafting in Dalglish; who was clearly out of touch with modern day football. This time it seems to me that they want to get it right. I believe they will as they have a good knowledge on how to run a sports club.

    No Plssss….
    Roberto Martinez
    Benitez
    Brendan Rodgers
    Fabio Capello
    Andre Villas-Boas

FRANK RIJKAARD AS MANAGER and Luis Van Gaal as Director Of Football….

If liverpool appoint middle class manager, only middle class player will join liverpool.

BUT if liverpool appoint SUPERP managar, sure all the SUPERP and fantastic players will join liverpool.

Before this liverpool already try managers from:
    FRANCE (Gerard Houllier).
    SPAIN: (Rafa Benitez).
    ENGLANG: (Roy Hodgson).
    SCOTLAND: Kenny Dalglish.

So now go for Holland Management…Bcos holland always got talent…that Frank Rijkaard who bring Barcalona to the Top.

And Give Him Money To SIGN:
    Higuain (Striker)
    Ibrahim Affaley (Right Winger).
    Eden Hazard (Playmaker).
    Kagawa (Left Winger).
    Lucas Biglia (Defensive Midfielder).

No one manager is perfect. Benitez is the right man for LFC at the moment. His transfer policy may not be good but his experience and ability to groom players(Lucas for example) is what we need. His past and seemingly unfogotten if not unforgiven faultwas alonso’s saga. Even under the most difficult times he managed keep LFC at seventh NOT eighth.

Don’t agree with the 10/10 for either of them. Neither Jose or Pep is going to get 200mn kitty & I don’t think they are good in rebuilding a struggling side with limited budget. 9/10 for Morinho & 6/10 for Pep (I don’t think he ‘ll be that good outside Barca)

3 more Managers I would love to see in this ranks though. My ranking would have been

    Deschamps 8/10
    Klopp 9/10
    AVB 9/10

I disagree about the limited budget, I think the FSG would back any manager in the transfer market, as they showed in the summer. However, Pep does have no experience outside of Barca, so your point is valid. My rankings were based on his accomplishments at Barca, and the fact that no Liverpool fan would complain if they landed him.

Interesting to see your ratings for AVB and Deschamps. AVB was immense at Porto, but it was an average league at best, and proved that although he tried to stamp his authority on the Chelsea squad, he couldn’t control the big ego’s that come with managing a big club. Deschamps is interesting. Though his track-record is good, he has several checks to his name regarding clashes with boards. With the patience of the FSG, I wonder if it would be such a wise appointment. Only time will tell!
