The search begins for Liverpool’s new boss: but who’s the right man for the job?

|

Liverpool are in turmoil at the moment. The ever revolving door of managers at Anfield has turned again, this time Liverpool legend “King” Kenny Dalglish being the latest victim of the boardroom boot, joining the now-England manager Roy Hodgson and Spanish mastermind Rafael Benitez. Three managers in two years says it all. Many assumed it was the end of the trouble when Dalglish was appointed, as he was the overwhelming fan’s favourite, and after-all, he had the Scouse pedigree. But yet again it wasn’t to be, and Liverpool find themselves in the all-too familiar situation of trying to find the man to fit the ever increasing bill. So who can they possibly find? Let’s take a look.

Roberto Martinez:

Pros – He’s the man of the moment, clutching safety from the jaws of defeat in two successive seasons at Wigan. He plays the attractive football that Liverpool pioneered in the 70’s and 80’s, and unlike Kenny Dalglish, handles the media as good as anyone in the Premier League.

Cons – Doesn’t have the managerial clout that some Liverpool fans may like, and struggled when trying to get Swansea promoted from League One. Also, has never managed such a high-profile club, and may struggle with the expectation.

Verdict – A risky choice, but could be fruitful if he sticks to his principles. 7/10

Brendan Rodgers:

Pros – Tutored by the great Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Rodgers is another wonder-kid manager, going from strength to strength.  He managed to get Swansea City promoted in his first full season in charge, and had led them to a very respectable 11th in the Premier League table this year, beating Liverpool on the final day of the season.

Cons – His spells at Reading and Watford were nothing to write home about, and has recently signed a new contract at Swansea, contracting him until 2015. This will mean Liverpool’s board will have to pay a considerable amount of compensation to acquire his services.

Verdict – An outsider with his contract status, plus his limited experience. 5/10

Frank Rijkaard:

Pros – Has vast amounts of experience at player and managerial levels, nonetheless coaching Barcelona to several La Liga titles after a barren run, and winning the Champions League in 2006. His ability to mix success domestically and in Europe will no doubt be music to Liverpool fans’ ears.

Cons – Had unwavering support at Barcelona from President Joan Laporta, and was given a chance to turn things around after a slow first season. Would he be given the same amount of time at Liverpool though, given their recent history?

The Fenway Sports Group inherited Hodgson. They listened to the Liverpool fans by drafting in Dalglish; who was clearly out of touch with modern day football. This time it seems to me that they want to get it right. I believe they will as they have a good knowledge on how to run a sports club.

    No Plssss….
    Roberto Martinez
    Benitez
    Brendan Rodgers
    Fabio Capello
    Andre Villas-Boas

FRANK RIJKAARD AS MANAGER and Luis Van Gaal as Director Of Football….

If liverpool appoint middle class manager, only middle class player will join liverpool.

BUT if liverpool appoint SUPERP managar, sure all the SUPERP and fantastic players will join liverpool.

Before this liverpool already try managers from:
    FRANCE (Gerard Houllier).
    SPAIN: (Rafa Benitez).
    ENGLANG: (Roy Hodgson).
    SCOTLAND: Kenny Dalglish.

So now go for Holland Management…Bcos holland always got talent…that Frank Rijkaard who bring Barcalona to the Top.

And Give Him Money To SIGN:
    Higuain (Striker)
    Ibrahim Affaley (Right Winger).
    Eden Hazard (Playmaker).
    Kagawa (Left Winger).
    Lucas Biglia (Defensive Midfielder).

No one manager is perfect. Benitez is the right man for LFC at the moment. His transfer policy may not be good but his experience and ability to groom players(Lucas for example) is what we need. His past and seemingly unfogotten if not unforgiven faultwas alonso’s saga. Even under the most difficult times he managed keep LFC at seventh NOT eighth.

Don’t agree with the 10/10 for either of them. Neither Jose or Pep is going to get 200mn kitty & I don’t think they are good in rebuilding a struggling side with limited budget. 9/10 for Morinho & 6/10 for Pep (I don’t think he ‘ll be that good outside Barca)

3 more Managers I would love to see in this ranks though. My ranking would have been

    Deschamps 8/10
    Klopp 9/10
    AVB 9/10

I disagree about the limited budget, I think the FSG would back any manager in the transfer market, as they showed in the summer. However, Pep does have no experience outside of Barca, so your point is valid. My rankings were based on his accomplishments at Barca, and the fact that no Liverpool fan would complain if they landed him.

Interesting to see your ratings for AVB and Deschamps. AVB was immense at Porto, but it was an average league at best, and proved that although he tried to stamp his authority on the Chelsea squad, he couldn’t control the big ego’s that come with managing a big club. Deschamps is interesting. Though his track-record is good, he has several checks to his name regarding clashes with boards. With the patience of the FSG, I wonder if it would be such a wise appointment. Only time will tell!
