It’ll be a well-managed ship that wins Southampton promotion

|

Yet, that isn’t the case and instead it is the modesty and downplaying of individual achievements – instead focusing on the final outcome, in this case whether or not they’re promoted – from Nigel Adkins, that has kept Southampton grounded and attentive to the end-goal – the Promised Land.

With Wenger-esque philosophies, the Southampton boss has simply summed up Southampton’s strategy: “It’s massively exciting – but what we’re doing is one game at a time.”

Their next game is tonight and sees Southampton take on Ipswich in the first of their remaining six home fixtures. With Rickie Lambert going into the game with four goals in two games and Kelvin Davis keeping five clean sheets in the past six games, conceding just one goal – a spotkick – and having not conceded from open play in 627 minutes, a score to nil result in Southampton’s favour looks the most likely result.

On average, there are 3.42 goals scored per game when Ipswich are involved – the highest average in the league – and although The Tractor Boys are a rather free-scoring side, paired with the fact that Kelvin Davis has produced a shutout of over 600 minutes, Southampton’s average of 3.33 goals per game in the last three home fixtures, bodes well for The Saints.

Adkins’ side will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to eight games and despite Ipswich coming to St. Mary’s having won five of their last six, the fact that they have the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 62% of their 60 goals away from home, will inspire Saints to continue their form at the expense of Ipswich’s.
