Does Money Matter Too Much In The Modern Game?

|

Furthermore we must not forget the pressure on these individuals, as the fans and media combine to attempt to form seemingly immortal individuals and not the human beings they once were. A still young and immature Wayne Rooney must not only perform on the pitch, but become a role model to young children and fans alike, something that was not in the initial job description.

Many fans will also not feel aggrieved by this issue, as they travel all around the country, and, all around the world to support their club. This happens, regardless of player wages or transfer fees. All the fans ask is for a comfortable win, a good performance, and, if necessary, the opportunity to tell these players when they are not performing up to expectations. Perhaps also many find issue with wealthy teams due to jealousy, with struggling fans looking up at the instant wealth of City and Chelsea with envy that their team was not so lucky.

Unfortunately, for me, there is too much money in the game, as this is directly forming arrogance and a lack of trust within our top flight players. The days of Bobby Charlton and George Best appear to be a distant memory for some fans, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo, Balotelli and Rooney, to name a few, demanding more and more money for their weekly trials and tribulations. Furthermore we must also consider the damaging effect on the talented youth in this country and around the world, as suddenly the incentive is no longer about playing football, but how wealthy and famous they can become.

I am content with footballers being rewarded for their quality, as pressures rise as they improve up through the different standards of leagues; however, I feel there should be a limit to the extent that investments can be made, alongside a maximum cap on player’s wages. I believe money should, and always will play some part in football, however with fees and wages rising; we surely must have some sort of limit to prevent it running and therefore ruining our game.

I personally think that Professional Football probably is all about the money, and has been for a century or more.

“The days of Bobby Charlton and George Best appear to be a distant memory for some fans”

Are you serious? Please read up on Georgie Best’s drink and cash fuelled lifestyle, he makes Balotelli look like a saint in comparison.

Remember the New York Cosmos, who have just arisen like a Phoenix from the flames of American obscurity, just played at OT, home of football marketing? They threw hundreds of thousands of dollars at seventies football stars who all ran after the silly money like yokels chasing a rolling cheese down a hill in Gloucester (or somewhere rural) – yes Pele, Marsh et al, money grabbing whores the lot of ’em, or normal professionals furthering their wages if you prefer.

There’s nothing new about City and Chelsea spending money to buy success, take off your rose-tinted specs please and learn your football history.

Also, if you don’t like the money aspect, follow amateur teams who are totally playing for the fun of it.
