Manchester City saw one of their key players make a move away from the club during the recent January transfer window.
Towards the end of the month, Joao Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season after making 26 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions, predominantly at left-back, prior to their away Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
The previous summer transfer window saw the champions move another one of their left-backs out of the Etihad Stadium as they sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal in a £32m deal.
As things stand, City only have Sergio Gomez in the squad as their main option in that position.
Should Pep Guardiola look to the next summer transfer window to try and solve this issue of the lack of strength and depth at left-back in his ranks, one player the club have been linked with that could provide a suitable fix is Ben Chilwell.
After being linked with a move for the full-back in 2020 before he joined Chelsea, the Citizens have been mentioned with a move for him again as a potential replacement for Cancelo.
Would you like to see City sign Ben Chilwell?
Yes
No
During his time with Chelsea, the Englishman has made 69 appearances for the west London club across all competitions, scoring eight goals and delivering 10 assists in the process.
Hailed for his “superb” technique by NBC Sports journalist Joe Prince-Wright, Chilwell currently has the highest rate of goal-creating actions per 90 minutes (0.63) at his current side, showing how much of a threat he carries going forward.
In addition to that, Enzo Fernandez (100%) Benoit Badiashile (81.8%), is the only outfield player at Chelsea that has a higher percentage of aerial duels won than the left-back (75%), though it could be argued that all three players have barely played this term.
Taking all of this into account, if City can convince Graham Potter’s side to sell the full-back to the Etihad Stadium in the summer, this would surely help Guardiola fix his left-back issue.
