Fabrizio Romano has said that it ‘would be really surprising’ if Manchester United sign Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus this month.

The Red Devils have brought in two players on loan so far in January, goalkeeper Jack Butland and forward Wout Weghorst.

Prior to a move for the latter, though, there was speculation claiming that United were exploring a move for Kudus, with behind-the-scenes talks underway.

The Ghana international impressed at the World Cup, scoring twice in three matched in Qatar, while he has also contributed to 12 goals in 22 games for Ajax this season. The 22-year-old is a player who Erik ten Hag knows well, with Kudus making more appearances under the current United boss than any other manager in his fledgling career.

However, speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano admitted he has seen the rumours regarding Kudus but said that any such transfer would come as a surprise, with United already landing Ten Hag, Antony and Lisandro Martinez from the Amsterdam club.

The Italian said: “I saw some rumours for January, but after giving Ajax €64 million for Lisandro Martinez and €100 million for Antony, to go there again and sign one more player after signing two players and the manager would be really surprising to me, honestly.”

TIF thoughts on Kudus…

A move during the January transfer window may now be unlikely following Weghorst’s arrival, although United could be on the search for a striker once again in the summer, as there is no option to turn the Dutch forward’s loan into a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Therefore, should Kudus remain with Ajax beyond the current transfer window, a summer swoop could be on the cards at Old Trafford.

He appears to be going from strength to strength and can play as an attacking midfielder or centre-forward, so he would offer plenty of versatility to United’s squad, meaning that it may be one to watch as the year goes on.
