Journalist, Pete O’Rourke has given his verdict on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke said that it would be a ‘statement signing’, should Wolves be able to bring the 23-year-old to Molineux.

Cunha has eight Brazil caps to his name, making his debut in September 2021.

A report from The Atheltic stated that talks for the player were not as developed as previously thought, but the club were still ‘in the hunt’ for the player.

Wolves won’t be the only club in for Cunha, Everton are also said to be keen on the player according to another claim by The Athletic.

O’Rourke stated:

“They need to spend but importantly it needs to be the right recruitment, so I think that Cunha would be a statement signing if that came off.”

TIF’s view on O’Rourke’s comments…

We believe that Wolves should take caution with their pursuit of Cunha, his goal contribution is somewhat underwhelming.

He did find success in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, Cunha provided 23 goal contributions in 40 appearances across all competitions.

However, since making the switch to the Spanish capital, his tally has been pretty poor. Cunha has 15 goal contributions in all competitions for Atletico Madrid.

Having said that, Wolves have an ace up their sleeve. Manager, Julen Lopetegui is someone who boasts an impressive CV, managing Real Madrid, Porto and Sevilla.

Perhaps Lopetegui could get the best out of Cunha and be the solution to Wolves’ problems in front of goal. They’re currently bottom of the league and have the lowest goal-scoring tally of Premier League side with a tally of eight.

Many of the Molineux faithful will trust the boss to get it right, so if he believes Cunha can be a useful attacking outlet for Wolves, they’ll back the decision.
