Matheus Cunha could be what Julen Lopetegui craves at Wolves, claims Dean Jones.

Atletico Madrid forward Cunha has been heavily reported to leave the Spanish club in the January window as they suffer from increased financial concerns after failing to qualify from their Champions League group.

Wolves were reported to be the main team involved with Fabrizio Romano previously claiming that the 23-year-old has “very good chances” to join the Old Gold.

He could well be the first signing of the Lopetegui era at Molineux which is yet to kick off following the World Cup break, with fans anticipating how they will turn their rock-bottom Premier League position around.

The Brazilian will be expected to play a key role in that, should he sign, with Jones telling This Is Futbol that Cunha’s energy is something that the Spaniard may be looking to inject into his struggling side.

“It’s an interesting one, this because of all the problems Wolves have, I wouldn’t say that this looks like one of the most glaring issues, but maybe it is that his experience and his energy is something that the new manager craves,” Jones said.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Cunha is certainly an all-action star and would surely prove to be a spark for a struggling Wolves side.

He’s not the most reliable of goal threats with him only managing 39 goals and 29 assists in 179 career games, even more concerning with him managing 15 goal involvements in 54 games in Madrid.

But one thing that won’t be wanting is his work rate and fight for the team with him in the top 5% amongst forward for tackles and interceptions over the past year, as well as the top 1% for blocks, his defensive output is staggering to think considering he’s a sporadic player at a consistent Champions League outfit.
