Wolves are in direct negotiations with Atletico Madrid over the potentially signing of Matheus Cunha, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Cunha looks to be the first player out the door in January as Atleti’s financial problems have worsened following their exit from Europe.

Unsurprisingly the 23-year-old may be used to raise funds with him struggling in Spain this season, yet to find the net in 17 outings and starting only twice in all competitions.

Wolves now lead the race for the Brazilian with Romano revealing on his YouTube channel that talks are underway between the two sides.

“There are negotiations are ongoing between Atletico Madrid and Wolves for Matheus Cunha, he was one of the players considered by Manchester United in the summer but they decided to go for something different.

“And now Matheus Cunha with Wolverhampton has very good chances to join the Premier League club.”

“They are in direct contact with Atletico Madrid with an official bid to come soon, so keep an eye on Wolves and Matheus Cunha as he could not be the only player in this deal between Atletico and Wolves,” Romano said.

TIF Thoughts on Cunha’s move…

Cunha will welcome the chance to kickstart his career again and Molineux looks like it could be the perfect place with the number of Portuguese speakers, the transition should be smooth.

However, the Old Gold may be worried about how consistently he will be able to add goal contributions to the side with only 39 goals and 29 assists in 179 career games, picking as many career bookings as assists.

His lack of reliability in front of goal could be a concern for a Wolves side who have only scored eight league goals, the lowest in the Premier League, but Julen Lopetegui will know he’ll have a player on his hands that can produce magic with an incredible solo goal scored for RB Leipzig winning the Bundesliga Goal of the Year in 2019.
