Liam Kennedy has revealed that Newcastle United aren’t planning on making big signings in the January transfer window.

There may be speculation about whether or not PIF will look to make a big splash in the transfer market come January if Newcastle find themselves still fighting for the Champions League spots, but it doesn’t appear to be a likely scenario.

Some reports have spoken about how Newcastle will go back in for summer transfer target James Maddison, however, Kennedy doesn’t believe this will be the case, with the club not planning to make a big splash like they did last January.

Kennedy was speaking about what he’s been told about Newcastle’s upcoming transfer window on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel.

(25:45) “They’re going to make sure, in my opinion, from what I hear and I’ve spoken to, there is a lot of long-term plans in place and I don’t think they’re going to go out and smash through that and think we can win the league this season if we go and sign three players for £60 million.

Will Newcastle be active in January?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“Then you get to the summer and they’ve finished fourth and they’ve got no money to spend in the summer even though they’ve qualified for the Champions League because they’ve basically spent their full allowance with FFP over three years etc.

“So I think they’re going to be sensible about it, which although people look at it and say they’ve spent £200 million they haven’t; been sensible so far, but actually they have, they could have gone out and spent a lot more money than this easily.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s transfer plans…

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It’s very smart if Newcastle are indeed not going to go crazy in January and just chase a top-four finish or try and win the league as Kennedy mentioned because it will only hamper them for windows to come.

The Magpies may instead look to bring in more younger players like Garang Kuol to ensure they have the foundations there for moving forward under PIF, and not just building for the here and now, albeit it could be easy to get caught up in the recent success.

It doesn’t mean there won’t be any signings in January because Eddie Howe will likely be keen for reinforcements to ensure they don’t let their standards slip in the second half of the season if players pick up injuries, he will want to have sufficient backup and cover.
