Alan Shearer stated on the BBC that he was blown away by Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min after his ‘incredible’ assist for South Korea against Portugal that sent them through to the World Cup round of 16.

South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1 thanks to goals from Kim Young-gwon and Hwang Hee-chan. Son was able to bag the assist for the winning goal and his side will now face Brazil for a place in the quarter-finals.

Shearer was full of praise for the move which lead to Hwang’s winner, as he sang the praises of Son for the part he played.

He said: “Everything about that goal was perfection. The run, the close control for him to get up there in the first place, and then to have the ability to pick that little pass and the weight of pass, the timing of the run and then the finish. It was meant to be, wasn’t it? Incredible.”

TIF Thoughts on Shearer’s comments…

We believe that this assist from Son could give him the much-needed lift he’s been looking for.

This season has been poor by the winger’s high standards, as he’s only found the net three times – all in one game – throughout the 2022/23 campaign for Spurs.

Many football fans will know just how excellent the 30-year-old can be when he’s in top form. He netted 23 times last season and 17 the season before that.

Furthermore, over the past year, he ranks in the top 3% of players in his position in terms of goals scored, as well as in the top 7% for non-penalty goals scored (FBref).

Perhaps his electric move for the winning goal will give Son a much-needed confidence boost once the World Cup ends – Spurs would certainly hope so.

A great run of form could see Tottenham put immense pressure on their rivals Arsenal, who are eight points clear of them at the top the league. If anyone can conjure up some magic for Spurs on his day, it’s Son.
