Journalist Craig Hope has revealed how Eddie Howe responded when he jokingly commented about ending Newcastle United’s trophyless run.

Newcastle have been in Saudi Arabia during the mid-season break as part of a warm-weather training camp.

As part of their visit, the Magpies took on Al-Hilal in the Diriyah Season Cup and ran out resounding 5-0 winners.

Miguel Almiron and Joelinton both grabbed a brace while youngster Dylan Stephenson also got his name on the scoresheet.

Hope has shared that following the game, he joked with Howe about ending the Toon’s trophy drought and shared Howe’s reply.

Speaking on the True Faith podcast, he said: “I did joke with Eddie afterwards saying, ‘Eddie, is this the end of the trophy drought?’ And he looked at me and said, ‘is that a serious question?’

“I said, no, just please ignore me, you know, just a silly statement. I think he genuinely thought I believed that the trophy drought was over, I’d been carried away in the moment.”

TIF Thoughts on Howe and Newcastle…

Will Howe win silverware with Newcastle?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The north-east outfit are without a major domestic trophy since 1955 and while they were Inter-Cities Fairs Cup winners back in 1969, it has been too long either way for a club of that size to be without honours.

However, expectations around Tyneside will be soaring given their start to this current campaign.

They sit third at the World Cup break and in a position to secure Champions League football while they are in with a great chance of reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Which of these United States stars has been linked with the Toon recently?

Either one of Manchester City or Liverpool will be eliminated, while only Manchester United could remain from the ‘big six’ at that stage, so perhaps the drought could well and truly be over by the time the season is out.
