Journalist Lee Ryder has claimed that fans should be really excited by Newcastle United after their display in a recent friendly, especially if they can add a few signings this January.
While the World Cup may still be going on, the Magpies are having to step up their own preparations for when Premier Lague football returns at the end of December.
With that in mind, they have been in Riyadh of late and they took on Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal this week and managed to win the game 5-0 thanks to braces from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron, as well as a further strike from Dylan Stephenson.
After the game, while speaking on Everything is Black and White, Ryder explained just how good the Newcastle team could be if they can ‘sign a couple more players’ this winter.
He said (06:59): “I know it was only a friendly, but if they play like did last night, I think we can be excited.
“If they’re going to sign a couple more players in January, you can be excited about that as well. Because if it’s only going to improve the team.”

This Newcastle team certainly does seem to be pretty impressive right now. Indeed, putting this friendly win the one side, they were tearing things up in the Premier League before the break for the World Cup.
As a result, they will spend Christmas day in third place – behind only Arsenal and Manchester City – and look as though they could be playing Champions League football next season.
Of course, to help with their ambitions they could look to the January transfer market to improve their squad. For instance, the Magpies have been linked with a winter swoop for the likes of James Maddison, Leandro Trossard, Marcus Thuram, Christian Pulisic, Moussa Diaby and Mykhaylo Mudryk (via 90min).
If they could land one or two of those names, then fans really could start to get excited about the future.
