Journalist Liam Kennedy has warned Newcastle United supporters not to expect big spending this January after quotes from manager Eddie Howe emerged.
Since their takeover, the Magpies have become one of the world’s richest clubs and have subsequently been able to sign some pretty exciting players. For instance, in the past 12 months, they have landed the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.
However, with the winter transfer market on the horizon, Howe has played down the likelihood of Newcastle breaking the bank for any new deals this January.
Indeed, while speaking to the press in Riyadh, the club manager explained that he is ‘not expecting too much business, whether incoming or outgoing’. However, he did say ‘we do need to be ready to act if we need to’.
In light of this, Kennedy took to Twitter to issue his own verdict on those comments. He said: “Don’t go expecting a big January spend. Unlike previous windows, where deals were a necessity, sounds like #NUFC will only move if they see an opportunity.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle United…
Despite this latest talk, it’s no surprise to hear that Newcastle United are already being linked with a number of exciting and expensive transfers this winter.
Indeed, as per The Sun, they have an interest in Brighton & Hove Albion and Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, but a deal would cost them £60-70m – with Manchester United also said to be in the running.
In reality, the club’s owners certainly have the cash to go and fund such a move. However, with things such as Financial Fair Play to take into account, the Magpies may well have to be smarter with their spending.
On top of that, there would be no point in Howe broadcasting to the world that they want to spend big, so this may just be a ploy to help negotiate some cheaper deals. Only time will tell.
