Newcastle United’s pursuit of Leicester City star James Maddison is set to develop further, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Magpies have been interested in the midfielder for a while, with a number of bids rejected in the summer, and they could be set to reignite their interest in the January transfer window.

Maddison has been in incredible form for the Foxes, earning himself an England call-up after scoring seven and assisting four times in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

Eddie Howe’s side currently sit in third place, having lost just once in the league this season, and signing a star like Maddison could take Newcastle to the next level.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that the club view him as an ideal signing, over some of the other names they have been linked with.

“It’s a really interesting idea and they’ve looked at various types of player,” Jones stated.

“I think they’ve been linked to Thuram, Diaby and Kudus. They’re all there or thereabouts, but Maddison ticks a lot of boxes for them. I think this is one that could get really interesting.”

TIF thoughts on Maddison and Newcastle…

Newcastle have been outstanding all season, and they still performed despite injuries to star attackers Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak, and adding another creative player could certainly help them finish in the top four.

Although their midfield is already strong, with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton particularly impressing, managing to sign the 26-year-old could transform the team further, and would also be a big statement signing.

Howe has done an incredible job to turn the club’s fortunes around, and signing star players from rival clubs will help show that his team deserves to be seen as one of the best in the country.
