Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has backed Harry Kane to bounce back from his World Cup disappointment after he missed a crucial penalty to end England’s hopes in Qatar.

England were awarded a second penalty of the game when Mason Mount was fouled in the box, and with France leading 2-1, it was a crucial moment to find an equaliser, but Kane blazed his penalty over the bar.

His side could not find the much-needed goal after that and were eliminated from the tournament, with Kane taking a lot of the blame because of his miss.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Gold defended the Spurs striker, who earlier that game had scored to become England’s joint all-time top scorer.

“The trolls are going to be out for Harry Kane tonight, ignoring the goal after goal he’s scored for his country. The 10 he scored to take England to this World Cup and the two goals and three assists he produced when he arrived. He’ll come back stronger. He always does,” Gold tweeted.

TIF thoughts on Harry Kane…

Kane has been playing at a world-class level for years, and his records for club and country are outstanding.

With 13 goals for Spurs this season, and two goals in this World Cup, he is having yet another exceptional season, but his international heartbreak will obviously be a blow ahead of the Premier League restart on Boxing Day.

Now level with Wayne Rooney on 53 England goals in just 80 appearances, he will definitely go down as one of the country’s finest forwards. However, with no major trophies to his name, he has received criticism for his performances in big moments, and the penalty miss will not have helped his case.

There is little doubt from us that Kane will recover strongly and continue to score goals for his club, but it remains to be seen what the short-term impact of such a traumatic moment will have on his season.
