Image for Newcastle United: Jones delivers verdict on club ‘interest’ in Ramos

Journalist, Dean Jones has said to ‘look out for interest’ regarding Goncalo Ramos. He told GiveMeSport that a number of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United are interested.

Other sides mentioned by Jones included the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Leeds United and Southampton.

Ramos netted a hat-trick for Portugal in the World Cup’s Round of 16 stage. They thumped fellow European side, Switzerland, 6-1. Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao also got themselves on the scoresheet.

The forward is currently with Benfica, he’s been with the club since he joined their youth side in 2013. A move away would be the first time he’s played his club football outside of his homeland, Portugal.

Jones stated, ‘While man-of-the-moment Goncalo Ramos looks a golden ticket that could move anywhere from Benfica – but he has a big release clause and holds more value than ever. Look out for interest from Leeds, Southampton and Wolves but also Newcastle, Arsenal and Man United.’

TIF’s view on Jones’ comments…

We believe that Ramos has been outstanding in the Liga Portugal this season with Benfica, so it’s understandable why a lot of clubs want him.

The 21-year-old has nine goals in 11 league matches, he also has three assists to his name. This means he has more goal contributions than games played in the Liga Portugal games played so far.

However, a striker isn’t a position that Newcastle need to prioritise in the January transfer window.

They already have Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak at their disposal.

Wilson has six Premier League goals to his name this season, he likely would’ve had more had he not suffered an injury back in late August.

Isak has missed a big chunk of the Magpies’ season so far, also through injury, but his goals-per-game tally is impressive. The Swede has two league goals from three appearances.

Adding Ramos would seem rather pointless, as the Magpies already have two clinical forwards in their squad.
