Journalist Keith Downie has claimed that Newcastle United and Brazil star Bruno Guimaraes could be in line for a salary increase to ward off interested clubs.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Downie suggested that the midfielder could sign a new deal without an extension, but with a pay rise to keep him at the club.

The 25-year-old has been exceptional since his arrival from Lyon last January, and Eddie Howe’s side currently sit third in the Premier League with just one loss all season.

Some of Europe’s biggest clubs are reportedly interested in the Brazil international, and keeping him happy at St. James’ Park would be a smart move.

“I don’t think he’s the sort of player who’s going to throw his toys out the pram if he doesn’t get that, I think he is a team player,” Downie said.

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if they maybe kind of just increased his salary, shall we say. It’s happened to a few of the other players of late as well, and they may not increase his deal, but they may just give him a bit of a pay rise to try and ward off interest from others.”

TIF thoughts on Bruno Guimaraes…

We think Newcastle have to do all they can to hold on to the midfielder, who has played a huge part in their transformation under Howe.

Despite not arriving with a potent record in front of goal, Guimaraes has already scored more goals for the Magpies (eight) than he has for any other side and in far fewer games (via Transfermarkt).

The Magpies were 19th in the league when the former Bournemouth manager was appointed, and one year on they are challenging for a Champions League spot.

The former Lyon star remarkably ranks in the top 10% of European midfielders for goals, dribbles, tackles and blocks as per FBref, highlighting how well-rounded he is, and losing him at any point would be a devastating blow to the club’s ambitions.
