Journalist Pete O’Rourke has suggested that Newcastle United could sign Marcus Thuram this January in order to help their hopes of a top-four finish.
German outlet BILD have reported that the French frontman will be available for just €10m (£8.5m) this January with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that the 25-year-old has been offered to Newcastle in the next window with Borussia Monchengladbach at risk of losing him as a free agent.
Now O’Rourke has claimed that PIF could take the chance to conduct a shrewd ‘piece of business’.
Speaking to This Is Futbol he said: “Yeah, it would be a good signing. Thuram obviously he’s away with France at the World Cup as well but his contract situation at Monchengladbach means that he could be possibly lured away for a relatively cheap fee in January rather than letting his contract run down next summer.
“So I think the German club will have a decision to make on him as soon as the January transfer window reopens and there’s been a number of top clubs expressing an interest in Thuram, the likes of Arsenal and Spurs have all been mentioned so Newcastle can go in there and steal a march on their rivals for his signature.
“It could be a good piece of business by Eddie Howe, especially if they want to maintain their hunt for a top-four finish.”
TIF Thoughts on Thuram and Newcastle…
Will Newcastle United finish in the top four this season?
Yes
No
Labelled a little bit ‘crazy’ yet ‘phenomenal’ by ex-teammate Denis Zakaria, Thuram would bring valuable versatility to the Magpies’ frontline.
Despite playing as a centre-forward this season and scoring 13 times in 17 games throughout his career the six-cap French ace has played predominantly on the left-hand side during his career in which he has scored 60 goals.
He would offer Eddie Howe another option and considering only Christopher Nkunku has scored more league goals than Thuram in Germany this season, bringing in the ‘monster’ – as described by Herve Renard – could certainly be worthwhile.
