Conor McGilligan has revealed his disappointment over Leeds United transfer target, Matheus Cunha, having been offered to another Premier League side.

It had been reported earlier in the week that Leeds were very much in the hunt for Cunha of Atletico Madrid alongside other Premier League teams including bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, following the injury to Armando Broja, it now seems as though Chelsea could become frontrunners to sign Cunha and help ease their striker woes heading into the second half of the season, much to McGilligan’s annoyance.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, McGilligan couldn’t hide his disappointment over Leeds seemingly missing out on another attacking transfer target.

(6:30) “I do believe that Chelsea would obviously be perfect suitors for someone like Matheus Cunha with the injury to Armando Broja.

“Now, this is where it’s disappointing because instead of clubs almost having the opportunity to do this it would’ve been great for Leeds to actually secure this transfer maybe already and have a contract agreement done and all this sort of stuff.

Will Leeds regret not signing Cunha?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“I know that can be difficult of course, but surely discussions should have been had if they were monitoring Matheus Cunha for months now but it doesn’t seem like that’s happened and it seems like the deal, maybe it hasn’t ever been a possibility for Leeds United.

“So now it looks like it seemingly always happens to Leeds when you look at Rodrigo de Paul, Matheus Cunha initially, Josko Gvardiol amongst many others, Charles de Ketelaere, the deal goes on for such a long period of time that then bigger clubs start to come in and the head is always turned of the player, naturally for more money and probably more success.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Cunha…

It will be a huge blow for Leeds and Jesse Marsch to have seemingly missed out on Cunha, a player that the American boss knows well from their time together with RB Leipzig and only compounds their recent woes in the transfer market.

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

Over the summer, Leeds tried to bolster their forward line by signing Bamba Dieng and Cody Gakpo, only for neither of those deals to materialise on what was a busy, but fruitless deadline day for the Whites.

While Leeds could still of course lure Cunha to Elland Road, if Chelsea are wanting to sign him, then it wouldn’t take much convincing given that Chelsea could offer more money and Champions League football.
