Leeds United journalist Adam Pope has claimed that he would like Mateusz Klich to remain at the club until the end of the season.
The Polish midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road, with all of his 11 Premier League appearances this season coming from the bench, while he has been strongly linked with a move to DC United in MLS.
The 32-year-old has made 192 appearances for the club since arriving in 2017, scoring 24 and assisting 21 times, and given that he arrived from FC Twente for a low fee whilst in the Championship, he has proven to be a good-value signing.
Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, Pope claimed that whilst it was understandable that he is probably going to search for more game time in the January window, he could provide some use until the end of the season.
Pope said: “He’s got 18 months on his contract, he’s not getting a game here.
“Sam Greenwood’s gone past him, you’d say, in terms of who comes in off the bench – and the fact he’s on the bench.
“He’s lost his World Cup place, so he’s obviously thinking ‘where am I going to play to get first-team football if it’s not going to be at Leeds United?’
“There’s a massive argument to say he could go. I’d like to see him stay until the end of the season and then maybe go, because I think he’s got something to offer.”
TIF Thoughts on Klich…
With just 18 months left on his deal, and transfer interest from MLS, Leeds are probably better off selling Klich now and bringing in another attacking player.
Although Klich is a popular figure at the club, his value is only going to fall, and being able to receive some money for an ageing player who is yet to start this season could provide a boost in the market.
Jesse Marsch’s side have been linked with a move for Milan’s Charles De Ketelaere and seem to be keen on bringing in another player who will usurp Klich in the pecking order.
