Rangers: Journalist drops big update on January transfer budget

Journalist Ewan Murray has insisted that whoever the Rangers manager is come January won’t have much money to spend.

That will likely be very worrying for Rangers fans, not to mention any potential manager who could come in to replace current boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, as the squad clearly needs improvements and upgrades, as they became the worst side to ever play in the Champions League group stages and sit nine points behind the SPFL leaders.

It’s also not as if the club went out over the summer and spent a silly amount of money which would naturally restrict them in the January transfer window, as Van Bronckhorst only splashed out just over £12m on new signings – despite some big-money departures.

And that doesn’t mean much is there to be spent by a potential new manager come the new year, as Murray spoke about on The Press Box podcast.

He said: “What do you really gain by bringing someone in in November whose first question will be, ‘how much money am I going to get to spend in January?’ – the answer, [from] what we know about Rangers, it’s not going to be fortunes.

“The supporters won’t like this – it might make more sense to have a proper, coherent plan lined up for the summer saying here’s what we’re going to do for next season.”

TIF Thoughts on Rangers’ transfer budget…

It won’t likely come as a shock that Rangers will have a restricted budget heading into January given how they crashed out of the Champions League and will have lost out on any potential TV money from staying in Europe.

However, it certainly won’t be appealing for any potential new manager as they’ll know it will be difficult to make this squad their own if they aren’t able to bring in players halfway through the campaign.

The Rangers board may also be writing this season off already, and that could be why there won’t be much money left to spend, as they would rather save it for the summer – but if they started building for the future now, it could make the summer window a bit more straightforward.
