Leeds United are still hoping of signing Cody Gakpo in the coming months but the player’s status will now make it difficult for the Whites to land him.

This is according to the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano who has been speaking about the future of the PSV Eindhoven star on his latest Here We Go podcast.

Over the summer transfer window, the Yorkshire club looked to acquire the Dutch winger with a potential move to Elland Road collapsing on the final day of the window.

And Romano believes there is still a hope from those at Leeds that they could make a push for the 23-year-old in the coming transfer windows.

However, having continued his fine form into the new campaign, Romano believes Leeds’ chances of landing the winger are much slimmer with bigger clubs now showing an interest in PSV’s gem:

(4:20) “Now what’s the situation? That Leeds are still hoping for Cody Gakpo. Southampton have been there for a long time. But from what I’m told now, the status of Cody Gakpo has completely, completely changed.

“So I think it’s going to be really difficult for Leeds and Southampton to go for Cody Gakpo and now there are top clubs following him not just in Premier League.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

It is hardly surprising to hear this from Romano. The form Gakpo has been showing of late has been nothing short of stunning with 18 Eredivise goal contributions to his name in just 11 games this season.

Do Leeds need to give up on Gakpo?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Given he provided 25 goal involvements in the league last season, it is also no real surprise to hear big European clubs are now expected to be sniffing around the Dutchman in the coming months.

It is believed the likes of Manchester United are showing their interest in Gakpo amid their own issues surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

And with clubs the size of United said to be in the Gakpo race, it is almost impossible to imagine Leeds being able to even land a blow in the fight for the talented winger.
