Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is the right man for the job at Villa Park and they should be eyeing the top six ahead of their next two games.

This has been suggested by the former Villa manager Tim Sherwood who has been speaking on TalkSport about the future of the current man in the Villa Park dugout.

There have been reports emerge over the last 24 hours regarding Gerrard’s position at the club following an underwhelming start to the campaign.

It has also been claimed that Villa are looking to target the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino as a potential Gerrard successor.

But Sherwood believes Gerrard should be given the opportunity to turn things around with winnable fixtures coming up against Fulham and Brentford:

“I think he’s the correct man for the job, I really do. And I think it’s too early to start talking about him losing his job.”

“So, listen them two games coming up are winnable games if Stevie wins them next two games. They’re looking at top six.”

TIF Thoughts on Sherwood’s comments…

A big part of Sherwood’s comments have been made completely without context as although six points could put them in the top six region, that would be depending on the sides above them to lose both of their upcoming games.

Gerrard in or Gerrard out?

So we do think that is a far-fetched statement from the former Villa manager. However, we do think that unless Villa have a quality replacement lined up – like Pochettino – they may be best to keep Gerrard.

There is a big break coming up which could offer Villa a great opportunity to really assess their options but as Sherwood suggested, there are two winnable games upcoming which could bide Gerrard some further time at the helm.
