Barry Ferguson has claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst might play both Antonio Colak and Alfredo Morelos in the Champions League this week.

The Gers remain bottom of Group A at the halfway stage and without a goal or a point after three convincing defeats in a difficult group, which now sees Van Bronckhorst’s men welcome the Premier League giants to Ibrox on Wednesday evening in need of a victory.

Morelos was given the nod in attack for the trip down south last week, but with Colak netting his 12th and 13th goals of the season at the weekend, it would be hard to leave him out of the side.

The manager has hinted that the two could play together, and Ferguson believes it may well be an option for the Dutchman.

When asked by host Paul Cooney on the Go Radio Football Show whether Rangers are ‘going to have a go’, Ferguson replied:

“I think they need to take something out of the game if they’ve got any hopes of getting that third place.

“Listen, Gio might come up with a gameplan, he might throw two up top – we just need to wait and see. He spoke about it last week in his presser, so it will be interesting to see what sort of team he puts out on Wednesday.

“But listen, you’ve got to be aware of Liverpool. Yeah, they’ve struggled domestically in terms of they’ve not won as many games as they would want, but they’re still a top-quality team with top-quality players.”

Should Rangers play two up top v Liverpool?

Colak has been in terrific form since his £1.8m switch from PAOK in the summer and has emerged as the first-choice striker for Rangers, starting all nine of their Scottish Premiership games to date.

But after leading the line in the 4-0 loss at Ajax, the Croatian has found himself on the bench in Europe, with Morelos favoured against Napoli and tonight’s opponents.

The Colombian has played a pivotal role on the continent for the Gers in previous seasons, netting 22 times in European competitions.

Colak himself has proved his worth in Europe but as Ferguson alluded to, playing two strikers could allow a ‘top-quality’ side to gain control in midfield and it remains to be seen what Van Bronckhorst decides to do.
