Rangers fell to their third straight defeat in the Champions League group stages as they were outplayed at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men underwent an onslaught as they could only claim 36% possession and allowed 23 shots on Allan McGregor’s goal.

To the Bears’ credit, Liverpool didn’t manage to score from open play despite having 10 attempts on target.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free kick gave the Merseysiders an early lead before Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty ensured the victory.

On the night, McGregor made eight saves – seven of which came from shots from inside the area as he rolled back the years, but Rangers Review writer Jonny McFarlane was also impressed with how Connor Goldson performed.

Taking to Twitter he posted: “2-0 is a decent result based on how that game panned out. McGregor was sensational, that 58th-minute save from Jota was one of his best. Much better second half and the Rangers subs added some threat at least. Goldson deserves credit too. Was solid.”

TIF Thoughts on Goldson and Rangers…

Do you think Goldson is replaceable at Rangers?

Goldson, dubbed a ‘monster’ by The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, has emerged as a standout at Ibrox since his £3m move from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018.

During the 2020/21 season, the £27k-per-week colossus was ever-present as the Gers ended Celtic’s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title.

He didn’t shy away from the challenge once again at the home of one of Europe’s elite clubs, finishing first on the night for clearances (10) and joint-first among his teammates for tackles (4).

The 29-year-old also made one block and lost just one of his six duels.

How well do you remember where Rangers' signings came in from down the years? Take our quiz to find out! First up, Carlos Pena was the Gers' most expensive arrival during the summer of 2017, but where did he join from?

However, Van Bronckhorst’s side are still pointless in Group A and without a goal after three games, meaning the manager will be hoping more of his players can step up when they welcome Liverpool to Glasgow next week.
