Rangers no longer need Alfredo Morelos according to Frank McAvennie who has been speaking to Football Insider.
Morelos is out of contract at Ibrox come the end of the season while Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has told Rangers Review that talks over a renewed deal are “ongoing”.
Nevertheless, the Colombian striker has found himself playing second fiddle to summer signing Antonio Colak so far this season and seeing him leave may not be as feared as it once was.
Morelos has already been disciplined by his manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst who decided to leave him out of the squad to face PSV in a crunch Champions League qualifier following his straight red card against Hibernian back in August.
He has started just twice this term and replaced Colak at Hearts on Saturday, scoring from the bench.
However, his positional peer has already scored 11 times for the Gers and McAvennie believes that Morelos is no longer required at the Light Blues.
He told Football Insider when asked that very question:
“No.
“I think the big difference this year is they have got somebody scoring goals. Whenever Morelos has been out or been in bother, whoever has come in hasn’t hit the ground running. Colak’s doing that.
“His stats are there for everyone to see. I thought, against Hearts, he deserved to get a hat trick but he didn’t and he will be annoyed at that as a striker. He will be gutted that he didn’t get his first hat trick for Rangers.
“But then Morelos came on and scored, it just shows you he’s not going away.“

The £11.7m-rated frontman has 114 goals and 51 assists in 231 appearances for the Bears, so his loss will be felt, but given the start Colak has made in Glasgow, he may be able to soften the blow.
Morelos has finished as the club’s top scorer in the Scottish Premiership in four of his five seasons at Ibrox, but with eight goals in eight games this season, Colak almost certainly will.
However, with two goals in just 119 minutes of league action, Morelos is ‘not going away,’ as McAvennie alluded to, but it remains to be seen whether he signs a contract extension.
