Christian Eriksen may have “jumped at the chance” to re-join Tottenham Hotspur this summer if there was a genuine possibility of a free transfer.

That is the opinion of journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

After leaving Brentford at the end of his short-term contract at the end of last season, Eriksen went on to join Manchester United as a free agent this summer.

It was thought that both the Bees and Tottenham were interested in the 30-year-old’s signature, but only Brentford and the Red Devils put forward genuine offers for the Dane’s services.

And O’Rourke believes that Eriksen, who has been described as an “absolute genius”, may have re-joined Spurs if the opportunity became available.

He said: “I’m sure if Spurs could have got him on a free transfer, he would have maybe jumped at the chance to go back to the club.

“We know what a great player Christian Eriksen is, and I think for any team, he definitely would be a good addition to the squad.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

It certainly seems as though Eriksen, who has been hailed as ‘unbelievable’, could have provided a spark and some dynamism to Antonio Conte’s midfield that they don’t have this season, with the Italian having a particularly regimented system.

The 117-time Denmark international is as creative as any other midfielder in Europe, ranking in the top 1% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for assists (0.37) and expected assists (0.28) per 90 minutes over the last 365 days, according to FBref.

Therefore, we believe that Conte really could have done with Eriksen sitting in that No 10 spot behind his frontline this season, with the north London side being a particularly tough watch so far this campaign despite having a relatively successful start.
