Journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte must get ‘annoyed’ with young winger Bryan Gil.

The Spaniard has barely featured this season. Indeed, he has not been trusted once in the Premier League, playing a total of 17 minutes spread across two substitute appearances in the Champions League.

He did recently catch the eye by winning a penalty – that Harry Kane later missed – in the 3-2 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite that, however, Pitt-Brooke has claimed that Conte won’t be happy with how the Spurs player performs.

While discussing the winger on The View from The Lane podcast, the journalist explained that Gil’s inability to hold onto the ball would be a source of frustration for his manager.

He said: “I love his enthusiasm and his commitment. I think if I was Conte, I’d be kind of annoyed by how whenever he gets the ball, it does tend to end up with the opposition pretty quickly, but it’s not for lack of effort.”

In the same podcast, Pitt-Brooke also pointed out the player’s lack of physicality, saying (22:43) he still looks like a ’12-year-old playing with a bunch of 17-year-olds’, before adding that he ‘gets knocked off the ball very, very easily’.

That certainly won’t be something that Conte appreciates, and seeing as Gil has barely played this season and was loaned out last term, it’s fair to assume the Italian isn’t his biggest fan.

Still only 21 years of age, the Spaniard has plenty of time to develop. Even so, considering Spurs paid Sevilla £21.6m to land him, it’s worrying that the player hasn’t made much of a mark in England so far.

Perhaps Gil will be able to convince Conte of his quality in the near future. For now, though, that feels like a big ask.
