Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has insisted that there will always be discrepancies with VAR in the Premier League amid Antonio Conte’s recent comments.

The Sky Sports pundit was speaking following Conte’s recent criticism of the officials in charge of the technology.

He was left frustrated at Anthony Taylor’s decision to award Emerson Royal a red card in the recent north London derby.

As relayed by Sky Sports, he said that referees in the country must “work a lot” to improve VAR, demanding that every decision must be “top” and insisting that the sending-off killed the game at the Emirates Stadium.

However, despite agreeing with the Italian, Robinson is adamant that “consistency” will never come.

He told Football Insider:

“I completely understand what Conte is saying.

“It’s frustrating, but at the end of the day, you are dealing with human beings – not robots. These referees have opinions.

“There is a law to abide by, but different referees can interpret those laws differently. One may think a challenge is a red card, another may not. One may give a handball, another may not.

“As much as we want consistency right across the board, we’re unfortunately not dealing with robots.

“You’re never ever going to get that complete consistency. It will never happen.”

TIF Thoughts on Robinson’s comments…

Is Emerson Royal good enough to start at Spurs?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Robinson does for sure raise a fine argument, and as we’ve all come to know in football, decisions often tend to even themselves out.

It is of course “frustrating” for Conte given that Royal’s red contributed heavily to the club’s first defeat of the campaign.

Having missed the win at Brighton & Hove Albion, the Brazilian will also be unavailable for games against Everton and Manchester United.

But it has presented an opportunity for Matt Doherty to prove his worth, and given the criticism Royal had been receiving, it could be a blessing in disguise.
