Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to pursue a deal for Leonardo Bonucci given his credentials.

Italian media outlet Calciomercato have reported that the centre-back is set to leave his current club amid a breakdown in relations with Serie A outfit Juventus.

The same source suggests that Bonucci could well reunite with his former boss Antonio Conte at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having played under the Italian in Turin between 2011 and 2014.

Speaking to Football Insider Whelan believes it is a deal he can see transpiring and feels it would be a great investment.

He said: “Look at Thiago Silva, look at Varane now.

“You can never have too much experience. He looks like someone who keeps himself in good nick.

“He’s fit, professional. Players like that bring a new dimension to a football club. He’s a serial winner with a really competitive nature.

“He won’t be coming to Tottenham, if he does, to just see out the rest of his career. He’ll be helping a team be successful.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if that did materialise, and what a player Tottenham would get – even if it is for only one or two seasons.

“He could bring a lot with his mentality, he can definitely be like Thiago Silva”.

TIF Thoughts on Bonucci and Tottenham…

Should Spurs sign Bonucci?

Fresh off a defeat to Manchester United that highlighted Eric Dier’s frailties, Conte may well feel that he needs to bring in the 118-cap Italy international.

The £200k-per-week beast has been dubbed “unreal” by Marco Messina and would bring a wealth of experience to N17.

In three years under Conte’s tutelage, Bonucci won three Serie A titles and is a nine-time Scudetto winner as well as having a European Championships medal with Italy from last summer.

Adding a defender the calibre of the 35-year-old could prove a masterstroke for Daniel Levy and the club may well look at Thiago Silva’s move to London rivals Chelsea as encouragement that a transfer would pay off.
