Former Tottenham Hotspur great Glenn Hoddle has urged the club to sign a playmaker like James Maddison.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones claimed that Spurs are big admirers of the Leicester City ace.

The Lilywhites are believed to have been strongly considering whether or not to bring in the creative midfielder in the summer.

Leicester are said to have opened talks with their star man over fresh terms with his contract expiring in less than two years but considering their poor start to the season he could be open to leaving.

With no such attacking midfielder in their ranks, Hoddle believes that’s what Antonio Conte’s side are lacking. Speaking on talkSPORT he said:

“They need some creativity. Because at the moment it’s down to them [Kane & Son], it’s down to Harry dropping in and creating when I think the style of the players they’ve got up the pitch, if you did have that [Christian] Eriksen when he was Tottenham, for example.

“Maddison, I agree with whoever said that in the background, I love him, I think he’s one that should be in the England squad. I think if he was playing at the top – no disrespect to Leicester – but if he was playing in a top-six team he would be absolutely sensational and probably a shoo-in.

“You know, someone like that who comes in off the lines, creative, you’ve only got to look at the best teams in the country and you’ve got them sort of players.”

TIF Thoughts on Hoddle’s comments…

Should Spurs sign Maddison in January?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Newcastle of course made multiple bids for the 25-year-old in the latest transfer window but neither met Leicester’s reported required fee of £60m.

Described as ‘world-class’ by England manager Gareth Southgate the former Norwich City ace scored 18 goals and produced a further 12 assists last season.

He has carried on that stellar form this term scoring six times and setting up another two in just 895 Premier League minutes.

That threat from out the field and eye for goal is why we believe Spurs should meet Leicester’s desired asking price.
