Sky Sports presenter David Prutton has dismissed the recent criticism of Nottingham Forest ace Brennan Johnson.

Johnson has started all ten games for the club in their first season back in the Premier League in 23 years.

He has two goals to his name but had the chance to add to his tally from the penalty spot against Wolves on Saturday.

However, the Welsh forward saw his spot-kick saved by Jose Sa as Forest fell to their sixth defeat in seven games.

Johnson has come under fire for his performances but Prutton has now responded to the critics.

Speaking on the Garibaldi Red podcast he said:

“Take out of the equation Brennan’s history with the football club and his dad, how well-liked and how well-respected he is. He’s an international footballer going to the World Cup, why would you be tossing games up.

“I understand sometimes there is an element of projection the way footballers are when their team is losing. I absolutely get that it comes with the territory, it comes with exposure it comes with the money.

“But the finger getting pointed at the lack of effort there is some players that you may come across like that in your career as we are when it comes to commenting on football but I don’t think Brennan Johnson A for him as the standards that he’s set by himself nor knowing the people around him would settle for at all.”

With just a 6.64 average match rating (SofaScore) the 21-year-old is ranking as Steve Cooper’s 12th-best performer this season.

However, the £2.5k-per-week ace is still the joint-top scorer this season albeit with just two goals.

Nonetheless, having led the scoring charts at the club during their promotion-clinching campaign last term his form is paramount and Cooper will be hoping his no.20 can rediscover his best as the club look to get themselves off the foot of the table.
