Scotland footballer Rachel Corsie has admitted on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast that she doesn’t believe Newcastle United’s first goal should have stood.

Newcastle’s opener has been a very controversial topic of conversation following their win on Sunday evening, as Wilson appeared to collide with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, sending the Frenchman to the floor before chipping into an empty net.

Jarred Gillett and the VAR team decided that the on-field decision would stand as Wilson notched his fourth goal of the season, although it did take a rather lengthy check as they looked at a possible foul and offside.

While the goal was allowed to stand, Aston Villa defender Corsie was still unconvinced that Wilson didn’t foul the Spurs captain.

She said: “I think it was a great finish, but I do think it’s a foul, which I know is controversial.

“The reason being, I just think Wilson checks his body; it wasn’t like they just came together – he knows they’re going to collide, he chooses to check and his arm comes across his chest, and for me, that makes it obstruction.

Should Wilson's goal have been ruled out?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“I think if he allows the collision and if it was more of a 50/50, maybe [it should have stood], but the goalkeeper gets there first.”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s goal…

The decision made by Gillett to allow Wilson’s goal to stand immediately was praised on Sky Sports by former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who believes he took up the perfect position and made the right call.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

As replays have shown, Wilson did very little wrong as neither player could’ve gotten out of the way, and the fact Lloris threw himself to the floor after minimal contact won’t have made his case any stronger in the VAR booth.

Wilson’s goal came at a great time for the Magpies as they then started to dominate the game and quickly made their ascendancy count by doubling their lead and putting Spurs in a very difficult position to overturn the deficit.
