George Caulkin has claimed that Newcastle United’s current transfer window successes won’t be able to last forever.

It emerged last week after Dan Ashworth spoke to the local press that he insisted Newcastle’s current spending wasn’t possible to keep up given that the club have splashed out well over £220 million, while not bringing in virtually any transfer fees.

What will have pleased both PIF and Eddie Howe is how pretty much all of their signings this calendar year have made a big impact and become regular starters under the manager, apart from Chris wood, who was likely only seen as a mid-season stopgap.

While he’s been impressed by Newcastle’s recruitment under PIF, Caulkin has claimed on Pod on the Tyne that their success can’t likely continue.

(34:05) “They’ve had an incredible hit rate in terms of the transfers they brought in so far and that probably can’t go on forever, but you would have faith that Newcastle would use that money, invest it sensibly and get better.

Will Newcastle be active in January?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“As I say, I don’t want Bruno to go I love him, but I’m using that as an example, it’s quite possible that until Newcastle are a top-four club, this is the situation that they have to face and all clubs do it now.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s transfer stance…

It has been very impressive how well Newcastle have done in terms of landing transfer targets and getting them settled into the team very quickly because it’s one thing having money to spend, but it’s another altogether to ensure that money goes on the right players.

For example, people just have to look at clubs such as Everton and Aston Villa as to teams that have wasted vast amounts of money over the years on players that have failed to make a lasting mark and impression on the league.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

While it is very unlikely that Newcastle will continue to avoid any transfer mishaps, it’s not impossible and Howe will be hoping his scouting department can do their due diligence to ensure they have as few poor signings as possible.
