Newcastle United need to make sure they’re in the running to sign PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands winger Cody Gakpo.

That is according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from St. James’ Park.

Gakpo, who has been described as “dangerous” by journalist Hamzah Khalique-Loonat, had been linked with multiple different moves to the Premier League over the summer, with the most likely destination seeming to be Leeds United, before the move fell through towards the end of the window.

Newcastle were amongst Manchester United, Southampton, and Everton in regards to sides that were rumoured to be interested in a move for the PSV star, with the Eredivisie club looking for a deal in the region of £45m.

And Jones believes that the Magpies need to be one of the sides in the mix for Gakpo’s signature, but convincing the 23-year-old might be a different challenge altogether.

“Newcastle need to make sure that they’re in that conversation [for Gakpo’s signature.]

“And then they’ve also got to convince him to join them, rather than somebody like Man United, which is never easy.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that if Newcastle were to sign the attacking superstar ahead of a club like Manchester United, it could possibly be another statement signing from the north east club since PIF took over the club in October 2021.

The seven-time Netherlands international would be a fantastic addition to Eddie Howe’s front line, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists in just 13 appearances for PSV so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, we believe that if Gakpo could transfer his goal output to the Premier League, Newcastle could potentially have a gem on their hands and £45m would look like a steal.
