Podcast presenter Taylor Payne has defended the new Newcastle United kit that was recently released to celebrate 130 years of the club.

The limited edition anniversary shirt is available on the official club website, with prices ranging from £50 to £105 – but it seems as though not everyone is happy with the Castore design.

Indeed, when the Magpies shared the new kit on their Twitter page, some fans expressed their anger at the design and made their feelings known in no uncertain terms.

Indeed, one user said: “That might be the most disgusting shirt ever made.” Meanwhile, another questioned the ‘quality’ of stitching on the badge as a fellow Toon supporter said: “Castore need binning off ASAP. That’s horrid.”

However, Payne seemed to be a lot more positive with his verdict on the Newcastle anniversary shirt.

He took to Twitter and wrote: “I know everyone seems to hate this, but I actually quite like it.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle United…

Judging from most of the reactions, it’s fair to say this design has not gone down too well. However, the club – and perhaps more notably Castore – will be glad to see Payne sharing some positivity on the kit.

The shirt was designed to ‘celebrate the Magpies’ ambition to become one of the best clubs of all time’, and while it may be causing some controversy, at least there is less division on the pitch at the moment.

Indeed, after a summer of big spending – buying the likes of Alexander Isak and Sven Botman – Newcastle are starting to get results.

After nine Premier League games, they have 14 points having lost just once all season. As a result, Eddie Howe and co went into the weekend sitting sixth in the league just two points off a Champions League place.
