Newcastle United’s interest in Leandro Trossard is something to “keep an eye on”, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Jones was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest transfer news at St James’ Park.

According to 90min’s Graeme Bailey (via The Sun), Newcastle are expected to rival Chelsea in the battle for Trossard, with the Belgian’s contract at Brighton & Hove Albion due to expire in 2024.

The same report says that the Tyneside club would be prepared to spend £25m in January to secure the 27-year-old’s signature and that a move to St James’ Park would attract the winger.

Jones says that while Trossard, who was hailed as ‘great‘ by his current manager Roberto De Zerbi, is not the only player of “that type” that Newcastle are looking at, there’s a good chance the deal could happen if it shows signs of progression.

He said: “If the deal shows signs of progressing, then it could well happen.

“He’s not the only player that they’re looking at of that type, but he definitely is one to keep an eye on.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We think that Trossard would be a sensible acquisition for Eddie Howe’s side in the new year, and that Newcastle fans would be delighted with his signing.

The 21-time Belgium international has enjoyed a fantastic start to the Premier League campaign this season, having scored seven goals and provided two assists in 12 appearances, meaning he wouldn’t have to face any adaptation to a different league.

Another forward addition would ease the burden on players such as Callum Wilson, Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin, and would offer the Magpies more quality depth in the attacking areas of the pitch next season.

For these reasons, we would advocate a Newcastle move for Trossard and think that Howe would be delighted at another sensible proven addition to his squad.
