Phil Hay believes that Jesse Marsch has to address Leeds United’s weaknesses at set pieces on the training ground.

It was well documented last season under Marcelo Bielsa and Marsch that Leeds were vulnerable from set pieces having conceded 18 times from them – the third-most in the Premier League – and it doesn’t appear to have changed this time around.

Despite having a full summer and pre-season to work with players and new signings, Marsch has seemingly failed to fix those problems, as they were caught out once again on Sunday from a corner when Aleksandar Mitrovic headed home at the near post.

Hay has now urged Marsch and Leeds to fix their woes from set pieces while speaking on The Phil Hay Show with a full week of training before their next match.

He said: “I think set pieces are one of the things that need [to be] addressed, without a doubt. As I say, I think in terms of the ability of the squad to sustain the intense running that is there to begin with, that’s probably something that needs to be worked on as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Leeds’ woes from set pieces…

As it stands, Leeds have conceded the joint fourth-most goals from set pieces in the Premier League this season with four (WhoScored), and they are such a fundamental thing to get right that Marsch has to be working on them this week as he aims to save his job.

The American manager is certainly under a lot of pressure at Leeds given unrest from fans, as well as people such as Hay claiming that the relationship between Marsch and the club doesn’t look like it will stand the test of time.

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

Marsch will likely be relishing this uninterrupted week of training to try and iron out the creases of his side’s game and ensure that they are tight at set pieces while not wasting gilt-edged chances, which is what star striker Patrick Bamford has done this season.
