Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett has insisted that Aston Villa won’t be relegated this season despite poor form.

Aston Villa are seriously struggling under Steven Gerrard with just two wins in the league all season and the manager did nothing to appease fans last week when he admitted Chelsea should be wiping the floor with them before a ball was even kicked.

Reports emerged earlier this week from Football Insider that Gerrard had indeed been sacked by the Villa board and while that hasn’t yet transpired, it’s no doubt he will be under pressure given they are only outside of the bottom three on goal difference.

Despite that worrying reality, Dorsett was rather bullish when it came to Villa’s chances of avoiding the drop when speaking on the Essential Football podcast.

(33:55) “When Dean Smith was sacked, Villa weren’t in trouble, but the Villa fans were told that it was because they need someone to take them to the next level and Gerrard at the moment isn’t taking Villa to the next level, so that’s very hard for Villa fans to stomach.

Should Gerrard be sacked?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“There’s no danger of relegation, it’s a malaise and I’m sure they’ll improve and get out of it, but I think that Steven Gerrard needs some results pretty quickly, that’s pretty clear.”

TIF Thoughts on Villa’s current situation…

It’s a bold take from Dorsett, to categorically say that Villa won’t be relegated and that they will be fine, as their current run of form would suggest that they are certainly going to be one of the clubs fighting it out at the bottom of the league this season.

Something that won’t be helping Gerrard is the amount of money spent on players and wages since he joined the club with over £170 million being spent on transfers, as well as likely big wages to Boubacar Kamara who joined as a free agent, and former Barcelona man Philippe Coutinho joining last summer.

With that amount of money being shelled out by the Villa hierarchy, it won’t likely be long before they’re looking at the situation and thinking about why Gerrard can’t turn things around with the squad that’s been assembled.
