The referee may well have made a huge mistake in the most recent Chelsea match as there could have been a red card for a foul on Armando Broja, which was aired on Amazon Prime video.

The Blues travelled away from home, but not very far, as they remained in London to face Brentford in the Premier League this week. In the end, both teams had to settle for a point as the match finished as a 0-0 draw.

However, things could have played out very differently had the referee opted to send of Ben Mee when he seemed to foul Broja who was running through clean on goal.

Indeed, in the Sky Sports’ highlights of the game, the Brentford defender can be seen as the last man trying to stop his opponent from scoring. Mee goes to ground, trips Broja and doesn’t win the ball, but the Chelsea striker gets to his feet and so the referee allows play to continue.

TIF thoughts on Armando Broja and Chelsea…

It’s a clumsy tackle at best and Mee certainly doesn’t win the ball clearly without taking out Broja too. However, as the young forward quickly gets to his feet to try and score, the referee isn’t forced into making an instant decision.

Play continues for a bit and the chance is ultimately wasted but VAR could have then gone back to check the incident to give the foul. They opted against that, and so Brentdord get lucky.

Seeing as Mee was the last man, had the foul been given, the referee would have had little choice but to give the red card. Considering the incident took place in the first half of the game, it would have likely had a huge impact on the final result.

With that in mind, Graham Potter and the Blues may well be feeling rather hard done by following this key decision.
