Celtic took the competition by the scruff of its neck last week when they kept Real Madrid out for the majority of the game and even created some golden opportunities which they ultimately wasted.
This time around, they didn’t fare much better against Shakhtar Donetsk in a game where they took the lead but were unable to hold out for all three points despite having some great chances to win the match.
Sutton pointed out on Twitter that last night’s draw was undoubtedly a missed opportunity when it came to picking up three points in their Champions League group as he vented his frustration online.
He wrote: “Performance good once again. Just not clinical when it mattered. Wasted so many chances. A point is ok but all in all a big opportunity missed tonight.”
Should Celtic have won last night?
TIF Thoughts on Celtic’s Champions League performance…
While going away from home in the Champions League and picking up a point could be seen as good value for Celtic, if they have true aspirations to make it out of their group, then a win should have been forthcoming last night.
When Ange Postecoglou and Celtic look back and analyse their draw on Wednesday evening, they will realise that they should have likely won the game given some of the chances they squandered – as well as the fact they got off 15 shots to their opponents’ five.
Given that Celtic’s group also consists of RB Leipzig, who they face next, the Bhoys may have been targeting maximum points against the Ukrainian side to try and make it out of their group, or at least avoid finishing bottom, as games against Real Madrid and Leipzig will likely provide much tougher tests.
With that in mind, it is easy to see why Sutton was left so frustrated.
