Presenter Conor McGilligan has slammed the Leeds United plan to chase Cody Gakpo as their number on target this January.

Having failed in their attempts to sign the PSV winger over the past summer, Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the Whites are ‘planning to push again’ for the Dutchman.

Indeed, the transfer guru claimed that Gakpo is the club’s ‘main target’ this winter. But, of course, they will face a ‘lot of competition’ for his signature.

For instance, Sky Sports reported that Southampton had a £21m bid rejected for Gakpo on deadline day, so the Saints may go back in for the player as well.

While speaking about the Leeds United transfer plan on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan called this plan ‘deluded and ‘silly’.

Indeed, he began (5:39): “I’m a little bit confused by how Leeds are going to go about this. I’m a bit confused by why that is public information at the minute from what Fabrizio Romano said.

“And I do think there is a little bit of a link with Romano and [Andrea] Radrizzani. You know, I will not say anything more on that, but I do think there is a little bit of news fed to him every now and again.”

Before adding (6:03): “I think that if that is our number one target in January, I think it’s a little bit deluded. I think it’s a little bit silly.”

TIF thoughts on Cody Gakpo and Leeds United…

With a stunning nine goals and six assists already this season in 12 matches for PSV, Gakpo has started like a man on fire and may already be pricing Leeds out of a move for him with such impressive form.

And with a World Cup on the horizon, a good display at the tournament would possible take his reputation to the next level. According to former Netherlands winger Rene van de Kerkhof who spoke to Voetbal International (via LeedsLive), Gakpo ‘will be the revelation of the World Cup’ and he ‘can do more’ than join a club like Leeds.

With Manchester United’s past interest in the player well known, it’s not as though some top sides haven’t already been linked with the Whites’ target. And so, all in all, it is starting to look a little ‘deluded’ for Leeds to chase a player who may soon be out of their reach.
