Charlie Eccleshare, of the Athletic, recently slammed Tottenham Hotspur for their Champions League loss and claimed they had it coming due to their poor style of football.

Despite currently sitting third in the Premier League table with an unbeaten record in the top flight, the Lilywhites recently lost their second Champions League game of the season, which has now left them three points behind the group leaders.

This loss came at the hands of Sporting CP, who bagged two late goals to secure the win after Spurs controlled the majority of the game but struggled to put the ball in the Sporting net throughout.

After the game, during an appearance on the View from the Lane podcast, Eccleshare claimed the loss was coming as Antonio Conte’s side have played very close games and they cannot win all of them.

He said, “They absolutely had this coming that you can’t if every game is an arm wrestle, which pretty much has been you’re going to come out the wrong side of them eventually.

“And so, this result would have surprised absolutely no one who’s watched Spurs regularly the season. You just can’t keep having these types of really close could go either way games because you’re not going to win all of them. And so, this was inevitable at some point.”. (4:42)

TIF Thoughts on Eccleshare’s comments…

So far this season Spurs have only managed to score more than two goals in a game once, which came in their season opener against Southampton where they went 1-0 down early on.

They also left it late during their first Champions League game against Marseille, where Richarlison bagged a brace in the 76th and 81st minutes, before losing to Sporting after failing to put the ball in the back of the net.

They need to change something soon, they cannot keep coming out with close wins in every game otherwise they face the issue of picking up draws and even losses in games they should be winning. It also could see them fall out of the top four and seriously underperform after their incredible summer transfer window.

There is no guarantee Conte or Harry Kane sticks around if they do not challenge in the Premier League, have a good showing in Europe and maybe win the FA Cup. If they keep playing the way they are, it is difficult to see how they do any of this.
