Tony Scott has claimed on the All Together Now podcast that he’s slightly worried over Anthony Gordon after his recent performance for Everton.

One of the biggest talking points throughout the summer transfer window was whether Gordon would be staying at Everton amid interest from rival Premier League clubs, although the Toffees rebuffed any approaches and kept the academy product at Goodison Park.

His early-season form has been rather impressive, managing to score two times already – just two fewer than his entire total from the last campaign. However, Scott was left unimpressed by the winger’s performance against Liverpool as he admitted to being concerned with Gordon’s display.

He said: “One thing I did notice from the match was Anthony Gordon’s performance, which I was quite worried about – in the future, hopefully he’ll learn from it.

“I thought he played it like a fan, personally. I thought he was using a lot of nervous energy.

“He was just trying too hard; he was playing the occasion and not the game.

“I think if that was Leeds or Brentford, he just rips the back out of Trent Alexander-Arnold and does the damage. But I thought he was just on the periphery and I just thought the game went to his head a bit – and I think Frank Lampard was right to take him off.”

TIF Thoughts on Gordon’s situation at Everton…

It will have been a huge relief for Frank Lampard and many Evertonians when the deadline came and went last Thursday with Gordon still an Everton player, even if they have potentially missed out on £60m.

However, if his performances aren’t going to be up to the standard required, it may well have been better off cashing in on Gordon, especially if his head doesn’t appear to be in the right place for a game such as the one on Saturday – although Scott does wonder if the weight of the occasion itself played a part.

It’s been a rather impressive start to the season for Gordon, hence there being so much interest in the winger. He’s currently the club’s top scorer this season and is leading the way in carries into the final third, so Evertonians will be hoping he picks up his good form in their next game.
