West Ham United could look to make a move for Tyrone Mings this summer.
That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the Irons’ remaining transfer plans with the transfer window ene=tering its final few weeks.
Mings has endured a difficult summer at Aston Villa, as manager Steven Gerrard stripped him of the captaincy, before dropping him for the West Midlands side’s 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth last Saturday.
Reports from ESPN would suggest that David Moyes’ side are looking for another centre-back this summer, with the club currently monitoring Manchester United and Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly after failing to land Conor Coady from Wolves, who eventually moved to Everton on a season-long loan.
And Jones believes that Mings could be an option for the Irons this season after what has been a tough few weeks at Villa.
He said: “Mings just needs a change of environment at the moment to help him get back to where he wants to be.
“West Ham tried to get Conor Coady, they didn’t get him.
“So I would say if they were in for Conor Coady, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they went for Tyrone Mings next.”
TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
We believe that Mings, who has been hailed as ‘outstanding’, would be a solid signing for Moyes’ side this season, with the Scottish manager needing to balance domestic and European campaigns as the club struggle for fit options at centre-back – a struggle laid bare during their opening day 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.
Mings ranks in the top 22% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues and European competitions for clearances per 90 minutes (5.11) over the last 365 days according to FBref, and has experience of being a Premier League captain, suggesting that he has obvious leadership qualities.
Therefore, we believe that the 29-year-old, who is under the same agency as Kevin De Bruyne, would be a solid signing for West Ham this season, as he would prove to be a strong voice in the dressing room and provide Moyes with another centre-back option.
However, he was handed back his starting role for this weekend’s win over Everton, so perhaps he has a future to fight for at Villa yet.
