Journalist Daniel Storey has spoken about the worrying situation Djed Spence currently finds himself in at Tottenham Hotspur.

The last two signings made by Spurs have been full-backs and both have been youngsters at the start of their footballing journeys in the form of Spence – who’s yet to make his Tottenham debut – and Destiny Udogie, who has gone back on loan to Udinese.

The former enjoyed a great breakout season last time out in the Championship with Nottingham Forest which saw him register two goals and four assists as a wing-back – a position very important to Antonio Conte.

However, he simply can’t seem to impress the Italian having been left out of two matchday squads this season – something Storey highlighted as a concern.

Was Djed Spence a necessary signing?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

As part of his weekly column was shared on Twitter, he wrote: “You wonder what Djed Spence is thinking right now. Conte is easing in most of Spurs’ summer signings, but Spence has been left out of the matchday squad for both of the last two weekends. In the era of nine substitutions, that’s not a good sign.”

TIF Thoughts on Spence’s Spurs situation…

Spence will have known that competition in the wing-back position was going to be rife this season, with the likes of Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Ivan Perisic able to slot in on the right-hand side, but to be left out of two matchday squads completely will be alarming.

How well do you know where these Spurs signings came from? Take our quiz to find out! Firstly, where did Dimitar Berbatov arrive from?

This is mainly because, as Storey mentioned, managers can name nine substitutes and also make an increased number of mid-game changes this season, and if Spence can’t even get named on the bench, something has to be fundamentally wrong so early into his Tottenham career.

It could be that Antonio Conte has had a change of heart over the likes of Emerson Royal, who had been linked with a move away but has started every league game so far – so perhaps Spence is the unlucky one having to do more work than expected to get into the Italian’s first-team plans.

Sell Emerson. Play Spense more, to gauge his output. Too many chances to Emerson already, but didnt improve ir contribute much.
