Journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed that Antonio Conte could be tempted to put Cristian Romero back in action for Tottenham Hotspur soon.
However, the defender’s recovery is said to be going well and he’s expected to be training with the rest of the team next week, meaning he could be in contention to play against West Ham United on August 31.
This is certainly the feeling of Gold. Indeed, when reacting to this Tottenham injury update, he took to Twitter to claim that Conte may well rush the player back for the game – as Romero will likely ‘want to play’.
He wrote: “I’m sure Romero will want to play against West Ham, as he did against Wolves and Forest.
“You’d think by Wednesday, if he can get a day or two of full training under his belt, Conte will be tempted to throw him back in as long as the muscle is showing no adverse reaction.”
Will Cristian Romero be good enough to get Spurs top four this season?
TIF thoughts on Cristian Romero and Spurs…
Last term, his momentum was interrupted by fitness issues too – that limited him to just 21 starts in the league – and so it’s easy to understand why he will want to return to action as soon as possible.
However, with that somewhat poor injury record, there may be fears of making his current problem worse if Romero is rushed back into action. With that in mind, even if Conte and the player are tempted by the idea, it may be wise to err on the side of caution.
